Participation terms & costs
These participation terms apply to participants that enter into a workcamp in Europe, the United States, Japan or Korea via the ijgd. With your signature (or that of your legal guardian) on your application, you are accepting the participation terms.
At the time of registration, your official place of residence must be Germany or a country where we are not represented by a partner organisation.
Age restrictions are dependent on the respective camp. Your age at the beginning of the workcamp is what is taken into account.
As soon as you have found a camp in our database, you can apply online for projects abroad. This can be done by easily dragging your desired camps into your shopping cart, which you can do by clicking on "add to basket". Your chosen camp will then appear in your shopping cart. If you click on "Apply Now" on the left side, you will automatically be redirected to the online application. Please fill in the application form entirely in English and only submit it once you have checked all your details. If you are a minor we will require your and your guardian's signature.
We will send you confirmation of having received your application. Your application is binding. Your commission fee will only be due once you have been accepted into a camp/MTV and have received an application confirmation from us via email.
14-day right of cancellation
Legally, a workcamp is a tourist offer. That is why the 14-day right of cancellation, that you will know from normal online purchases, does not apply. (cf. § 312 g par. 2 No. 9 German Civil Code). Your camp booking becomes legally binding as soon as we have sent you the application confirmation via mail. Should you want to cancel your place after that, relevant costs will have to be covered (see cancellation).
Participation fee / Costs
- € 190 for participants under the age of 18 (Teenage Camps)
- € 190 for participants over the age of 18 in Camps in a european country
- € 250 for participants in Camps outside of Europe
Members of the association each receive a € 20 discount. If you take part in more than one workcamp you will get a € 20 discount.
Solidarity contribution: We want to make it possible for all people, regardless of their financial situation, to participate in our work camps. You can help us by voluntarily paying € 10 extra in agency fees. We look forward to your support!
MTV (Mid-Term Volunteering, from the age of 18 onwards):
- € 250 for participants in an MTV in a european country
- € 495 for participants in an MTV outside of Europe
Members of the association each receive a € 20 discount.
You can take part in a preparation seminar if you are registered for an MTV in a european country. If you are registered for an MTV in the global south the preparation seminar ist obligatory.
Some camp/MTV organisers charge an additional fee on site. This is marked as "extra fee" in the respective camp description. If this extra fee is required for your camp/MTV please give this to the organiser once you have arrived on site.
Accommodation, catering and a small leisure programme are free of charge in the camp. You will need to pay for the trip to and from the camp yourself.
Should there be no more space in a project that you wish to join, we will advise you on alternatives if possible. If you do not agree to these, you can withdraw your application.
For camp participants in the US there is an option of applying for a travelling allowance (8 cents per km). If you make use of this travelling allowance, the commission fee will increase to € 300. More information concerning requirements can be found in the information sheet for US travellers.
If for some reason or another you can no longer take part in a camp that you applied for, please contact us as soon as possible. This will allow other volunteers to have the opportunity to take your space in the camp. If you cancel up until four weeks before the camp starts (on the day we receive your cancellation), we can reimburse you for half of the commission fee (workcamps: €60/€50). Unfortunately, if you cancel later than this we cannot reimburse you at all. We must receive the cancellation in written form (email, fax, post).
Change of registrations are possible if there are still free spaces in your other chosen camp. For a change in registration we will charge a service fee of €40. In justified cases (such as proven sickness) you may apply for a different camp in the same calendar year without any additional costs.
You will be responsible for planning and financing the trip to the camp by yourself. You can start planning your trip directly after having received the application confirmation (ideally to the nearest large airport or train station).
At the latest three weeks before the start of the camp, but in most cases even earlier, we will send you an email with the detailed camp description (information sheet) with the detailed description of how to get there and the address.
Depending on your passport and residential status you might need a visa to enter certain countries. As far as possible we will help you with that, if needed.
If you take part in a workcamp, your active assistance in the respective working project (approx. 20-30 work hours) is also binding. This is why your financial contribution is so low. Sometimes a change in the planned work tasks might be necessary (such as in the event of sudden bad weather,...), which does not absolve you from the work obligation you entered into.
Additionally to your tasks, the success of the project is also dependent on your commitment. Your contribution is also to be present from the first to the last day in the camp (exceptions are only possible upon consultation), to help out with chores that need to be done (communal cooking, cleaning...), and to actively help out in shaping the social happenings within the group. If a camp member fails to comply with these obligations and continues to disturb camp life despite warnings, he or she is acting contrary to the contract and may be excluded from the camp with immediate effect.
The ijgd advises you in your project choice, takes over the communication with the event organiser on-site and is available to answer your questions before the start of the camp/MTV.
For workcamps and MTVs abroad we are only operative as an intermediary. The organisers are the respective partner organisations, chosen by us according to the standards of the „Alliance of European Voluntary Organisations“.
Should the project get cancelled, the responsible partner organisation will offer you an alternative. If there is no alternative project for you, you will receive your commission fee back as well as any potential travel costs that may have arisen (provided you send us the receipts). Further claims to the ijgd are not possible.
In the event of illness, your own health insurance is responsible. If you are not privately insured, it is necessary for you to take along your health insurance chip card.
Participants with residencies in a country that Germany has a social security agreement with (EU countries, Bosnia, Kosovo, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Tunisia amongst others) must bring a proof of claim for the German health insurance. Participants without their own health insurance cover must immediately inform ijgd of this, or otherwise no demands can be made to the ijgd.
Participants from countries other than the ones mentioned above will be insured by the ijgd. However, illnesses existing before the start of the trip as well as chronic illnesses are not included in the insurance.
In the event of an accident, your own health insurance or that which the ijgd arranges for specific participants or groups is responsible. During working hours and during your free time you are additionally insured for accidents through the ijgd. This accident insurance comes into use in the event of total disability, until a maximum of €80.000.
The ijgd will insure you against personal injury and damage to property (up to €5 million) as well as financial losses (up to €300.000). Damage caused with intent is not covered by the insurance.
Generally, we advise for participants to get a travel cancellation insurance as well as luggage insurance.
Participants are insured in the event of an insolvency of the ijgd according to § 651k of the German Civil Code.
